The Film Wild Wealth Will Conclude the Second Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF)

Santo Domingo, September 7, 2012

The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) will come to a close on Sunday, September 9, with the screening of the film Wild Wealth, produced by the Inter-American Development Bank and National Geographic. The screening will take place at the auditorium of Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) at 7:00 pm.

The USA production (35 minutes) will be followed by the discussion panel “The Economic Value of Nature,” which will feature the participation of Jorge Requena, Chief of Operations of the Inter-American Development Bank in the Dominican Republic, and Roberto Herrera, President of EcoRed.

Later on in the program, the Festival will reveal the winners of the Globo Verde short film and public service announcement competition.

Wild Wealth is a documentary that depicts the wealth of biodiversity in Latin America and the Caribbean in images not previously seen. Produced by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and National Geographic. The film crew travels from the Andes to the Amazon to tell five stories that illustrate the need to protect the region's natural resources. With striking images, the film shows why Latin America and the Caribbean are considered a biodiversity superpower. Six of the world's 10 most biodiverse countries are in the region, which are home to 33 percent of the world's mammals, 35 percent of reptiles, and half of tropical forests.

Following the screening, panelists will evaluate examples of sustainable biodiversity conservation in the areas of tourism development, agriculture, fisheries, job creation, and environmental protection.

The panel will also address how communities can work together to maintain a balance between economic, environmental, and social objectives, in turn preserving the environment and the region's resources for future generations, while wisely utilizing resources as a source of economic development.
