Samaná, January 15, 2013
As a way of promoting the Samaná Peninsula's impressive natural and cultural heritage, as well as commemorating the start of the 2013 annual whale watching season, the Second Annual Humpback Whale Festival was officially launched today in the coastal city of Santa Barbara de Samaná. The whale season, which runs from January 15 through March 15, brings the highest concentration of north Atlantic humpback whales in the world to DR's northeastern coast.
Throughout the week, the Festival will carry out several community activities designed to raise environmental awareness among young people in, and around, Samaná. The activities include creative painting workshops, lectures, conferences, educational games, presentation of local artists, and several film screenings.
The film screenings, provided by the DR Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), an initiative of GFDD and FUNGLODE, will provide audiences the opportunity to watch leading films from around the world specifically devoted to the topic of ocean conservation and the understanding of whales.
Three whale-themed films, Where the Whales Sing, Ocean Voyagers, and Big Miracle, will be shown free of charge to audiences at the Pueblo Principe complex in Samaná from January 15-18.
For more information on the films, and on the upcoming III DREFF, taking place from September 4-8 in 7 cities across the country, we encourage you to visit us online at: www.dreff.org.
The Second Annual Humpback Whale Festival is made possible by contributions from programs such as the DR Environmental Film Festival, and from the support of private, public and governmental organizations such as the Dominican Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources; CEBSE; FUNDEMAR; Boat Owners Association of the Bay of Samaná, and Samaná City Hall, among others.

Marcos Diaz
A real Universal Community leader and spokesman for the core values of the UN Millennium Development Goals as it is the Dominican swimmer Marcos Diaz. He will meet a group of youth, who will have a swimming competition, at La Caleta. The expected goals of this activity is to offer an opportunity to youth of disadvantaged areas to interact with Marcos, and to get a better understanding for the role model that Marcos represents for Dominicans and the rest of the world, as well as a better understanding of the sea and this protected area of La Caleta.
