Santo Domingo, January 30 2013
As part of its mission to elevate the awareness of environmental challenges and to promote the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister institution in the Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), joined with Biblioteca Infantil y Juvenil Republica Dominicana (BIJRD) to develop environmental activities for Dominican youth. The activities aim at raising the awareness about environment among young Dominicans, encouraging practices that will positively contribute to the sustainability of nature.
The program, which was initiated this past November with the celebration of BIJRD’s First Environmental Film Festival, continued today with the screening of Anna, Emma and the Condors. The short film, which premiered during the II DR Environmental Film Festival, tells the story of the Parish family who came together to fight for the survival of the California Condors.
The screening, which took place at 10:00 AM at the Library’s La Trinitaria Auditorium, was followed by a discussion led by Kate Wallace of the Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean birds (SCSCB), and Eladio Fernandez, the renowned conservation photographer. The important guests shared their personal experience of bird conservation in the country, and provided students with an opportunity to learn about the wealth of bird species that inhabit the island of the Hispaniola. More than 90 students were on site to enjoy the film and exchange impressions with the experts.
In addition to the film screening, on January 31, GFDD will be inaugurating the Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment’s Photo Exhibit at the BIJRD. The Exhibit displays information, photos and graphics from the Dominican Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Environment and provides young readers with basic knowledge on environment and conservation of nature.
Published by GFDD/FUNGLODE in 2009 and being available online in English and Spanish, the Dictionary is a unique source of information on environment and natural resources of the Dominican Republic. The volume incorporates information on a wide range of disciplines, including chemistry, physics, geology, biology, atmospheric engineering, earth and soil sciences, geography, demography, economics and law.

Community in Action!
Supporting grassroots organizations and communities
Among the goals of the DR Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), is to include and support grassroots organizations and communities, schools and young people in general.
Marcos Diaz
A real Universal Community leader and spokesman for the core values of the UN Millennium Development Goals as it is the Dominican swimmer Marcos Diaz. He will meet a group of youth, who will have a swimming competition, at La Caleta. The expected goals of this activity is to offer an opportunity to youth of disadvantaged areas to interact with Marcos, and to get a better understanding for the role model that Marcos represents for Dominicans and the rest of the world, as well as a better understanding of the sea and this protected area of La Caleta.
