GFDD Launches New Community and School Gardens Website

On Friday March 22, GFDD/FUNGLODE was proud to launch a new website highlighting its EcoHuertos Program, which supports the creation of sustainable vegetable gardens in schools and communities across the Dominican Republic. The program, which to date has created vegetable gardens in 12 schools and 2 community centers in Santo Domingo, Bani and Azua, continues to expand by reaching new educational centers and offering technical workshops designed to increase the students knowledge base. By teaching students and communities how to conserve seeds and create organic compost, we can create self-sustaining garden systems that can prosper in the long term.
GFDD hopes the website: www.eco-huertos.org, will encourage schools, community centers, as well as public and private organizations, to join the EcoHuertos program and participate in this global movement that aims to build and sustain healthy communities.
The impetus behind the EcoHuertos Program arose from the interest sparked among students participating in the Community Garden Workshop conducted by Rose Lord of Make Garden Not War, during the I DR Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) in 2011. The Make Gardens Not War organization is an initiative of the Global Coalition for Peace, which seeks to encourage the creation of vegetable gardens around the world.
The EcoHuertos Program is reflective of DREFF's overall mission to interact with leading figures in the environmental community and to make a difference at a grassroots level. The Festival aims to raise awareness and deepen understanding of environmental issues among Dominican audiences. At the same time, DREFF celebrates the beauty and diversity of the Dominican Republic's natural heritage and offers insights intended to contribute to its appreciation, conservation and sustainable use. The III edition of the DR Environmental Film Festival will take place on September 4-8, 2013.

Community in Action!
Supporting grassroots organizations and communities
Among the goals of the DR Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), is to include and support grassroots organizations and communities, schools and young people in general.
Marcos Diaz
A real Universal Community leader and spokesman for the core values of the UN Millennium Development Goals as it is the Dominican swimmer Marcos Diaz. He will meet a group of youth, who will have a swimming competition, at La Caleta. The expected goals of this activity is to offer an opportunity to youth of disadvantaged areas to interact with Marcos, and to get a better understanding for the role model that Marcos represents for Dominicans and the rest of the world, as well as a better understanding of the sea and this protected area of La Caleta.For more details about Marcos Diaz visit Dominican Get-Together in the Big Apple
