Representatives of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) have received numerous petitions for the past several weeks from contestants of the Globo Verde Dominicano Award asking for more time to develop their proposals they are intending to present to the third edition of the contest. The three categories are short films, public service announcements and the recently added photography category.

As a result of these petitions, contest coordinators along with directors of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development, have decided to give an opportunity to the contestants: the contest registration date will be extended to August 1st and the deadline for turning in entries will be August 11th.

We would like to remind everyone that the winners of the contest will be announced during the IV Dominican Environment Film Festival that will be held from September 10 to 14, 2014. It is also important to repeat that all entries must be marked and identified only with a pseudonym or alias and sent to the following address:

The organizers of the fourth edition of the DR Environmental Film Festival (DREFF), an initiative of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and its sister institution in the Dominican Republic, Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), held two meetings with volunteers looking to help out at this year’s Festival, to be held September 10-14, 2014.

The meetings took place on Wednesday July 9 at 5pm and on Thursday July 10 at 10am at FUNGLODE headquarters in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Emy Rodriguez, GFDD’s Environmental Programs Manager, set out the tasks and responsibilities for the aspiring volunteers as well as the schedule, objectives and outreach of this cinematic and educational initiative.

Ms. Rodriguez explained how being a DREFF volunteer is a unique networking experience that will enable those involved to interact with the DREFF work team, film producers, sponsors, members of the Festival in addition to many other attendees of the event.

Volunteers must be 18 years of age or over, and will be selected on the basis of availability and competency in the given area.

This fourth edition of the Festival will screen more than twenty five national and international documentary films in Santo Domingo, San Francisco de Macorís, Santiago, Baní, San Juan de la Maguana, Puerto Plata, Sosúa, La Vega and Samaná.

All of the film screenings, panel discussions, and workshops are open to the public and free of charge. In addition, this international film and environmental event will feature awareness raising activities at all eight of the screening venues.

Since 2011, the DREFF has worked to raise awareness and deepen understanding of environmental issues among Dominican audiences, while celebrating the beauty and diversity of the Dominican Republic’s natural heritage. In addition, the Festival provides information and proposals that contribute to the appreciation, conservation and sustainable use of the planet.

With the screening of a diverse selection of high quality films on issues of environmental concern, and by bringing together young people, scholars, experts, activists, filmmakers, representatives of the public, private and non-governmental institutions and the general public, the Festival promotes programs and projects that contribute to environmental protection, conservation and sustainability.

The main thematic areas of the Festival are: Ocean conservation, Biodiversity, Green Economy, Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change.

The Festival offers a variety of possibilities for participants to interact with leading figures in the environmental community as well as opportunities to collaborate in national and international programs that are making a positive impact in the world.
