DREFF – Cinemateca Dominicana Alliance: Environmental Film and Responsible Practices for Everyone to Enjoy
March 26, 2017Santo Domingo – The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) and the Cinemateca Dominicana (part of the Dominican Republic Film Commission) concluded last Wednesday in Santo Domingo a week of environmental film and debate on good practices and sustainable development in an unprecedented initiative.
The special programming, within the framework of DREFF’s Year Round Environmental Film Screening Program, took place from March 16 to 22, in tribute to the World Water Day celebrated on the last day of screenings.
“With this initiative, we aim to foster and inspire dialogue, raise awareness and promote sustainable practices”, commented Maria Victoria Abreu, DREFF programming director, while referring to the films on critical environmental and sustainable development issues chosen for this event. “This cycle of Film and Environment denotes the strengthening of the alliance between DREFF and the Dominican Republic Film Commission, through the Cinemateca”, continued Abreu.
Omar Shamir Reynoso, GFDD Environmental Programs Coordinator, explained: “This project seeks to awaken among citizens a culture of sustainable and responsible practices.”
This joint event is the first one of several cycles thought to promote environmental cinema.
Dozens of film enthusiasts and environmentalists gathered in the Cinemateca room to enjoy movies scheduled in previous editions of the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival. During the screenings, viewers had the opportunity to share and talk with experts in this area, including Marvin del Cid, Osvaldo Vázquez, Ginny Heinsen and Cesáreo Guillermo. “The information presented in the documentaries is a call to be better citizens and exercise our consumer power responsibly,” said Guillermo, who was a panelist at the end of Saturday’s schedule.
