DREFF Celebrates World Science Day for Peace and Development at Centro de Excelencia Cristina Billini Morales
November 11, 2016Santo Domingo – As part of the celebration of World Science Day for Peace and Development on November 10, the Science Club of the Centro de Excelencia Cristina Billini Morales Fe y Alegría hosted the screening of several environmental documentaries, thanks to the collaboration of the DREFF´s Year Round Environmental Film Screenings Program. The welcoming remarks were offered by Omar Shamir Reynoso, GFDD Environmental Programs Coordinator.
The films screened were Dominican Republic Biodiversity and Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience, through which more than 60 students of the center learned about the main species of flora and fauna of the country, and the most important aspects of recycling as a way of protecting the environment.
Dominican Republic Biodiversity is a project of the newspaper Diario Libre that was born as an initiative of Marvin del Cid, a friend and collaborator of the DREFF, with the intention of creating a long-term archive of the natural wealth of the Dominican Republic.
Garbage or Resource? A Dominican Republic Experience, for its part, is a short film produced by GFDD / Funglode and directed by Natasha Despotovic, which shows us how recycling has become an important economic opportunity for Dominicans.
In conclusion, the students had the opportunity to share the experience with Marvin Del Cid, an environmental journalist who talked with young people about their doubts and curiosities. World Science Day for Peace and Development is an opportunity to showcase the importance of science in our daily lives and to feed the debate on scientific issues.
“I am very grateful that my public school, in the Los Guaricanos sector, has been taken into account for this type of activities,” said teacher María Estela Doñé, who urged her students to maintain a protectionist behavior with the environment.
