Environmental Education with GFDD at Chica Abuela Summer Camp

SAN FRANCISCO DE MACORIS-GFDD/Funglode screened two animated short films, PETer Plástico and The Change and stressed the importance of Dominican environmental film during the 2017 Chica Abuela Summer Camp. The camp has been held annually for more than 10 years, and this year received support from the National Authority of Maritime Affairs (ANAMAR) to include environmental issues in its agenda. The day’s activity under which the screenings took place, titled “Learning About the Environment,” was part of ANAMAR’s broad initiative to investigate, conserve, and leverage living and nonliving marine resources.

The films discuss the management of plastic waste and sustainable living with the environment, and were enjoyed by the camp’s student participants.

The film shorts were presented by Reydi Moreta, Social Networking and Promotion Coordinator at GFDD/Funglode, who gave the opening remarks and spoke of environmental initiatives which the organizations aim to impact through both their activities as well as those of their joint initiative – the Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) and its year-round environmental film screenings. The stage was also shared with important members of the community and ANAMAR staff, who led a discussion about the oceans and sea mammals.
