In honor of its 20th year anniversary, two new activities were added to FICMA program; namely the Global Encounter for Environmental Education, and introduction to the DREFF, which was presented by Yamile Eusebio, Director of GFDD New York Office. Ms. Eusebio was able to discuss at length the important agenda that GFDD/FUNGLODE is developing in the Dominican Republic through its environment programs. The FICMA Global Encounter is a new initiative which brings together leading environmental organizations from around the world, including the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), Goodplanet Foundation, and Fundacion Biodiversidad, among others, to share lessons learned and help promote their respective environmental education programs.
Ms. Eusebio presented the DREFF Education programs; such as ReCrearte, Eco-Huertos, Premio Globo Verde Dominicano, and shared the successes of the educational expeditions to Pico Duarte, which is DR’s highest mountain summit. During the power-point presentation, Ms. Eusebio emphasized that the environment has been at the forefront of GFDD/FUNGLODE's mission since its very beginnings and DREFF aims to raise awareness and deepen the understanding of environmental issues among Dominican audiences.
Speaking to an international audience on Saturday morning, November 9, at the Cosmo Caixa venue in Barcelona, Ms. Eusebio animatedly discussed the remarkable DREFF statistics for 2013 and the positive impact on more than 6,500 spectators around the country, complemented by year- round environmental screenings, and other activities in the Dominican Republic.
The International Environmental Film Festival (FICMA) was founded in Barcelona, Spain, in 1993 and has been held every year since without exception. As such, it has the distinction of being the longest running environmental film festival in the world and is the only festival of its kind to hold competitions and which does not accept productions that are more than a year old. This places it ahead of other festivals of this type. The FICMA is an internationally recognized festival and in the year 2000 received the Princes’ Award (a European Community prize awarded by the European Agency for the Environment of the EC and the Princes’ Award Foundation).
FICMA is the founder of the largest and most important global network of festivals of this kind: The EFFN (Environmental Film Festival Network). The EFFN is made up of festivals in many countries such as the United States, Argentina, Peru, Spain, Portugal, Ghana, Israel, France and Mexico, and it aims to maintain a solidarity and a collaborative relationship between different events as well as being an international reference point for the latest news on cinema and the environment on the web.
