    Film Synopsis:

    Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s latest film focuses on one of the major challenges to human survival: water. Today, as the world’s population increases and the impact of climate change worsens, water has become one of our planet’s most precious natural resources. Filmed in 20 countries, A Thirsty World reveals the mysterious and fascinating world of fresh water through spectacular aerial images shot in difficult to reach and rarely filmed regions, like Southern Sudan or Northern Congo. It enables us to discover the most beautiful landscapes on our planet, the lakes, rivers and wetlands created by water. Blending the filmmaker’s trademark aerial views of the world with the harsh, everyday reality of people who are deprived of water and may even die for lack of it, the film also spotlights people engaged in the daily struggle to find water, purify it or bring it to those who need it.

    Biography of Director Yann Arthus-Bertrand:

    Yann Arthus-Bertrand, of French origin, is a well-known photographer, journalist, reporter and environmentalist. He has always been passionate about the animal world and natural environment. He contributed to several prestigious magazines such as National Geographic and Life. At the first Rio Conference in 1992, he decided to undertake a long-term project called The Earth From the Air, a photographic encyclopedia published in 2000, a portrait of and homage to our Earth. In 2005, he created the GoodPlanet Foundation that seeks to raise awareness of environmental issues among the general public, implement carbon offset programs and combat deforestation, along with local NGOs. He has worked on various projects for the United Nations, such as Of Forests and Men, which he directed in 2011 and was the official documentary for the2011 International Year of the Forest. His most recent documentary is Planet Ocean, which he co-directed with Michael Pitiot for the Rio + 20 Summit.

DREFF Year Round Programs

The Eco-Huertos Program seeks to support the creation of organic and sustainable vegetable gardens in schools and communities throughout the Dominican Republic. Through ongoing field activities, the program bolsters the natural sciences curriculum in the schools.

The contest is divided into two categories: short films and public service announcements. With this contest, GFDD and FUNGLODE seek to promote environmental filmmaking as a platform to educate and raise awareness.

The ReCrearte Program aims to raise awareness of the 3Rs of solid waste management: reduce, reuse, recycle. The workshops also emphasize and demonstrate how recycling waste into art can empower individuals and communities alike.

As part of its mission to reach more communities, institutions and individuals around the country, the DR Environmental Film Festival organizes film screenings year-round, providing the opportunity to bring successful film programs to new and remote communities.

Complementing the DREFF's mission, the GFDD has risen to the challenge and, since 2012, has started producing its own short documentary films that highlight and raise awareness about important local environmental issues.
